Have played several games now, and I am really impressed with this "medium-weight" game.

There is some clever ambushing that can be accomplished in the early game, blocking other people's caravans to prevent access to the oasis. Also, it is fun to lure the other player into a distance race with a caravan that you don't really care about, and pass him with one or two much smaller caravans that he's ignored.

I am undecided about opening play... and the actual value of blocking off large sections to achieve space bonuses. Is it really worth the effort? It doesn't appear to be a direct strategy, due to the loss of the caravan races elsewhere. It seems that this is a side strategy, best left to times when you are forced into the play.

I LOVE game mechanisims that force scoring into "swings", where you gain 10 points, and your opponent loses out on 10, creating a 20 point swing factor. This game has a sweet "teetering" effect, you feel on the knife's edge of every play, and that the game can turn in one move.

Hard to remember the details now, it's been years, but this 80's game, "TRUMP", with the Donald on the cover was great at that. I'll have to dig it out and show it to you all...
